ARCHITECTURE & EXCAVATIONS
The history of the city through its buildings
Italian Presence & Excavations
The Italian occupation was an important page in the recent history of Kos. We have on the island and especially in its capital, brilliant buildings of that period.
We start from the area where the old catholic church is located. Proceeding to Miaouli's coast, we find in front of us the hotel GELSOMINO ( jasmine ), built in 1929. Not very far from there, is found the palace of the Italian governor.
We enter Platanos Square where, in addition to the building of today's courts, we can admire one of the two surviving mosques from the years of the Ottoman occupation.
Continuing to Nafklirou Street, where was found the Jewish quarter before the 2nd world war, we overview the area of the ancient agora, which was excavated and restored, in part, by the Italians.
Our final destination is Eleftherias Square, which was rebuilt by the Italians and established as the central square of the city, after the catastrophic earthquake of 1933.
